Chasing The Smell

There are certain things that make you notice people. The office is full of lively and charismatic characters, but there is always one feature you would be able to describe on a person.

I work in the same pod as Skater Tom, he looks like a skater and is called Tom. It is the most unimaginative nickname you could ever think of but it is perfect. If you ask anyone in our whole organisation who Skater Tom is, they would be able to tell you.

If I pop into another department, then I can find Wendy who cooks cakes on a Monday. There’s Blushing Matt, who will and can become embarrassed at the slightest mention of anything even remotely not politically correct.

My favourite guy at work is one of these people and I barely even know his name. I have no idea what he does and no idea of what department he is in. I know he walks around the office and I know that he comes passed my desk just after the coffee van has left. I don’t even need to look up to know he has passed by my desk.

His nickname in our department is The Smell. We don’t even know his real name. What we do know is that he has a beautiful smell and when he walks through our little section of the office, he leaves a trail of perfume behind him.

I have very little frame of reference in the whole cologne world. I got bought one by the misses every time I run out. I wear what she likes and I couldn’t even tell you the name of it.

What I can tell you is that The Smell wears Hugo Boss and he wears it really well. We know because we spent weeks trying to figure it out and finally we managed to pick the right one.

I’m not saying I have a man crush on this guy, I really couldn’t even tell you what his face looks like. This isn’t the thing I love about him. It is purely his smell and he is the reason that I constantly hunt out any Hugo Boss sale and then try to find his smell.

That’s the thing about The Smell, he doesn’t smell of Hugo Boss, he smells of him. His smell is Hugo Boss and Hugo Boss is his smell.

There are people in the office who have a nickname which they would never like to find out. I’m pretty sure that if The Smell was ever to be told his nickname and the reason for his nickname, that he not only wouldn’t mind, but he would be pretty happy to have such a positive association with it.

I mean he could be a forty-year old man called Skater Tom and we’re pretty sure that not only does he know about his nickname, but that he really hates it.
